An application to the Home Office for funding in the Hirael and lower High Street areas of Bangor has been successful and will see 41 new CCTV cameras installed along with improved street lighting and ANPR cameras on Beach Road.
The Safer Streets Fund is a £25 million UK Government scheme to provide funding to ‘hotspot areas’ within England and Wales that are disproportionately affected by neighbourhood crime.
Following a bidding process, grants of up to £550,000 are provided for projects to improve security in areas particularly affected by acquisitive crimes such as burglary, vehicle theft and robbery.
Bids are evaluated against a set criteria and bidders are asked to outline a plan to reduce crime within a local crime hotspot, demonstrating value for money, evidence of community engagement and long-term sustainability.
Following the successful bid in Bangor there will be:
- 41 new CCTV cameras –
- 26 in Hirael
- 8 in Mount St and 7 in Deiniol (lower High Street area).
- 6 New Street Lights in the car parks on Beach Road
- 2 ANPR cameras on Beach Road (automatic number plate recognition)
- Module for a neighbourhood alert system
- 500 crime prevention packs for premises.
Councillor Keith Jones said: “Following an application to the Home Office for funding in the Hirael and lower High Street, I have been given the good news that our application was successful.
“A massive thanks to PC Lisa Thomas and North Wales Police, also to Catherine Eirlys Roberts, the Local Authority and the Highways department. They were pivotal in making the application possible and all worked hard to get this application across the line with limited time available.”
“Don’t forget to thank PC Lisa Thomas when you see her out and about. She deserves so much credit. It was her initiative and determination to go for the funding initially.”
