Young people from Bangor enjoyed success in last week’s virtual alternative to the Urdd Eisteddfod.

 

Eisteddfod T is the virtual alternative to the Urdd National Eisteddfod, held annually during half term.

The Urdd National Eisteddfod is an annual Welsh-language youth festival of literature, music and performing arts organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru. It has been described as “Europe’s largest youth festival.”

Since 1929, there have been only four instances when the Urdd Eisteddfod hasn’t been held; during the Second World War, as a result of the foot-and-mouth crisis in 2001 and due to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

The virtual edition, Eisteddfod T was held in 2020 and for the second time last week. This year, over 13,000 competitors took part, including many Bangor youth.

The week was off to a good start when Sling-born Rhiannon Gwyn scooped the prestigious Art Prize.

Siân Gwenllian, who represents the Arfon constituency in the Sendd said: “I would like to send my warmest congratulations to all Bangor and Arfon youth that took part in Eisteddfod T, and to those who were successful.

“Arfon is an area bustling with creative energy, especially amongst our young people.

“Our youth are a great source of pride for us all, and it’s great to see them receive such wonderful experiences.”
