Local politician Siân Gwenllian is urging young women with an interest in politics to register their interest as part of the #LeadHerShip programme.

Chwarae Teg is a gender equality charity in Wales and is offering young women across Wales the opportunity to shadow a Member of the Senedd and gain unique insight into the day-to-day life of a Member of the Senedd (MS).

Women continue to be under-represented in politics and public life, with 43% of elected MSs being women. However, this figure fluctuates and is inconsistent across political parties. The decisions made by Members of the Senedd affect every area of our lives, and it’s crucial that women’s voices are heard in these debates so the decisions that affect everyone are made fairly. Chwarae Teg want to build young women’s understanding and engagement with confidence, as well as improve confidence to speak up and make your voice heard about the issues that matter most.

When elected in 2016, Siân Gwenllian MS was the first woman to represent the Arfon constituency. This year she is taking part in #LeadHerShip, a programme organised by Chwarae Teg.

The programmed is aimed at young women aged between 16-22 that have an interest in politics.

Siân Gwenllian MS said: “Women continue to be underrepresented in Welsh public life and that’s why I am working with Chwarae Teg as part of their #LeadHerShip Senedd.

“As a part of the programme, young women aged 16-22 that have an interest in how political decisions are made in Wales can gain experience of what it’s like being a Member of the Senedd and working in politics.

“Applications close on Monday 16 January.”
