Marks & Spencer has confirmed that Bangor is among 500 potential locations it is actively assessing for new or expanded M&S Food stores, as part of a nationwide acceleration of its store renewal programme.
Bangor – which already hosts an M&S store – has now been earmarked for an additional, larger Foodhall, listed officially as “Menai / Bangor” in the company’s updated Property Requirements Brochure. The document outlines all target locations across the UK, placing Bangor at number 23 within the “North West & North Wales” region.
A Major Phase of Growth for M&S
The move follows M&S’s announcement of a sweeping expansion strategy aimed at doubling the size of its food business, upgrading its estate to 180 full-line stores and 420 dedicated Foodhalls.
To achieve that, the retailer has launched a search for sites across 500 strategic areas, including towns and cities where M&S already trades, and others with no current store at all.
According to M&S, the company is particularly focused on securing larger Foodhall sites averaging 18,000 sq ft, allowing stores to offer the full breadth of its modernised M&S Food range, wider aisles, and improved parking facilities.
Why Bangor?
While Bangor already benefits from an existing M&S, the retailer’s renewed push for bigger-format Foodhalls reflects strong performance across Wales and the North West. The inclusion of Menai / Bangor signals M&S’s intent to strengthen its presence in North West Wales, potentially capturing demand from:
-
Bangor’s large student population
-
Commuters and families across Gwynedd and Anglesey
-
Cross-bridge shoppers travelling via the Menai Strait
The site criteria for non-London stores include a high-visibility plot, 150+ parking spaces, and easy access from major roads — suggesting M&S is likely assessing retail parks or edge-of-town opportunities around Bangor.
Part of a Rapid Rollout Across the UK
M&S confirmed that 20 new or renewed stores will open between November and March, generating around 800 new jobs. The retailer also recently acquired 12 former Homebase sites, signalling its appetite for substantial Foodhall conversions.
Alex Freudmann, Managing Director of M&S Food, said the company’s strong Foodhall performance “gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth,” adding that the ambition is to “bring the right stores to the right places.”
What Happens Next?
Being listed as a target location does not guarantee a new Bangor store — but it does mean that M&S’s acquisitions team is actively searching for viable sites in the area. Once a suitable development is secured, M&S typically moves quickly, with some new Foodhalls opening within 12–18 months of announcement.
For Bangor, this could mean:
-
A new, larger M&S Foodhall supplementing the existing store
-
Potential job creation and investment in the Gwynedd retail sector
-
A modernised destination store capable of full “weekly shop” capacity
Given Bangor’s strategic location and strong footfall drivers, retail analysts see it as a high-potential candidate for one of the next wave of M&S Food expansion sites.
