Traffic management has resumed on the Menai Suspension Bridge after work was temporarily suspended following an incident involving bridge workers and a member of the public.
In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, UK Highways A55 confirmed that full traffic management measures had returned to the bridge after operations were paused over concerns for the safety and welfare of workers.
The company said: “Abuse directed at operatives working on the Menai Suspension Bridge has become a common feature of the Phase Two programme, however the latest incident placed the welfare and safety of operatives at risk so the decision was taken to pause operations.”
UK Highways A55 confirmed that if further harassment or non-compliance occurs, incidents will be referred to North Wales Police, operatives will leave the site and the bridge will be closed.
The company also reminded motorists to comply with the height and weight restrictions that remain in place while the programme of works continues.
Responding to the statement, Plaid Cymru Members of the Senedd for Bangor, Conwy and Ynys Môn – Mair Rowlands MS, Elfed Williams MS and Rhun ap Iorwerth MS – welcomed the resumption of traffic management while condemning the abuse directed at workers.
They said: “We welcome the news that full traffic management measures have been restored on the bridge, and are disappointed to hear of incidents where workers were subject to abuse by members of the public. This is completely unacceptable.
“It is important that people comply with the height and weight restrictions that remain in place, and treat everyone working on the bridge with respect.
“As local members, we’ll continue to do all we can to represent our constituents to ensure the programme of works is completed safely and as promptly as possible. Repeated slippage in the schedule has been frustrating and costly, and we will act with a focus on the interests of everyone who relies on these crossings.”
