Maesgeirchen Amateur Boxing Club in Bangor have applied for ‘The Your Community, Your Choice Awards’ with the hope of being awarded £2,500 to develop the club.
The Award is a special fund which uses cash seized from criminals, to help community projects in North Wales. The Community Fund has been set up jointly by North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Arfon Jones, North Wales Police and the North Wales Police and Community Trust. The scheme has awarded over £200,000 in five years and this year £40,000 will be shared between various groups in North Wales.
A shortlist of applicants has been chosen by a special panel and voting opens to the public on October 30 and runs until December 1, with that vote deciding who wins the cash.
Maesgeirchen Boxing Club
This grant funding would help purchase much needed gym and boxing equipment for the Maesgeirchen Boxing Club. A much valued local institution, which has been run for almost 30 years by a well-known former champion, Brian Williams. There is a high demand for Club membership and being able to obtain more equipment will allow more young people to have the opportunity to participate. Young people of all ages, from the age of 6 upwards, train at the Club.
The equipment we have identified for purchase have been carefully selected after making a thorough assessment of the Club’s current needs, and is essential for healthy development within the Club.
Maesgeirchen is one of the very few communities in Wales which has been accorded a new designation – Children First (also known as ‘Children’s Zone’) which is being developed at the moment. This new programme is a framework for local agencies to work together more effectively and it does not come with any funding. The Boxing Club’s development therefore will provide much-needed, familiar, continuity during this period.
Boredom among young people is well-known as a contributing factor to anti-social behaviour. This has been true in Maesgeirchen as it is in other places. The Boxing Club has been a key stabilising force locally for many years. Many young people have benefited from the training and discipline instilled during the training it provides. Self-discipline and self-awareness along with respect for opponents and for other people generally, are key ingredients of the training and these qualities have a much broader beneficial effect on the lives of participants than merely during those times when they are in a boxing ring.
Last year Bangor Gymnastics Club were successful in their application to buy equipment for their new Parkour/Free-Running classes and were awarded £2,490
