Bangor-born engineering student Evangela Voma, who studies at Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus, travelled to the NEC in Birmingham recently to take part in the WorldSkills UK Finals LIVE, joining over 500 of the UK’s top apprentices and students competing for Gold, Silver or Bronze in their chosen skill.

WorldSkills UK LIVE is the UK’s largest skills, apprenticeships and careers event and is free to attend. At the heart of the event are the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Competitions, which are run in 70 different skills across industries including Digital, Technology, Engineering, Construction and Hospitality.

Designed by industry experts, the WorldSkills UK Competitions equip apprentices and learners with the excellent skills needed to help UK businesses better compete globally. The WorldSkills UK Competition in Mechanical Engineering: CAD is run in partnership with Semta.

It has been quite a year for Eva, who secured her place in the WorldSkills UK Finals after excelling in the National Qualifiers, winning a silver medal in the Mechanical Engineering Computer Aided Design category in January. She then went on to scoop the ‘Overall Student of the Year’ award at Coleg Menai’s summer awards ceremony, having already won the ‘Achiever of the Year’ award in the Engineering category.

Eva said, “I have always enjoyed designing, and I love the fusion of design and engineering that essentially makes CAD what it is. My dream is to be a design engineer, and taking part in these competitions has boosted my confidence, sharpened my skills and encouraged me to pursue my goals.”

Lecturer at Coleg Menai and Eva’s tutor, Mac Jones said, “Eva is an extremely enthusiastic student who is thriving in her studies. She worked hard to prepare for this competition, as with every other one she has taken part in, and is a credit to the college. We are incredibly proud of her.”
