Welsh Labour have retained Deiniol Ward following yesterday’s Bangor City Council by-election, on Thursday 5 September.
Kieran Ashton Jones was duly elected to Bangor City Council with Labour polling 34 votes, Plaid Cymru 29 and the Welsh Conservatives 19.
The vacancy follows the resignation of Labour councillor Salik Rahman who was elected in August 2018, but stood down from the council in June 2019 due to other commitments.
Steffie Williams Roberts Chair of the Bangor Branch of the Labour Party said: “We’re very proud of Kieran, he worked hard on the election campaign and showed the people of Deiniol his dedication and loyalty.
“As a local lad, he wants to see Bangor thrive and we can’t wait to support him as a Bangor City Councillor. We’d also like to wish Salik Rahman and his Family all the best on their new adventures in Chester.”
Newly elected Bangor Councillor Kieran Ashton Jones said: “Thank you to the people of Deiniol ward for electing me as their new Welsh Labour Councillor.
“Thank you to my predecessor Salik, and fellow candidates for a good campaign. Huge thanks to the Arfon Labour Team for all their support and help.
“I am eager to get started in the new role and to begin helping the people of Deiniol.”
Deiniol is one of eight electoral wards in the city of Bangor. The ward covers the centre of the city including the High Street and Bangor Cathedral area, according to the 2011 Census, Deiniol has a population of 1,839 people.
Two councillors represent Deiniol on Bangor City Council and one county councillor on Gwynedd Council.
