A Jamaican brunch, a special guest flying in from Florida and stories of friendship across the Atlantic will bring people together at Bangor’s Penrhyn Hall on Saturday 10 October.
One World Café’s first anniversary celebration takes place from 10.30am to 12 noon at Penrhyn Hall / Civic Hall, Ffordd y Gwynedd, Bangor, supported by North Wales Jamaica Society and Learning Links International CIC. Jamaican Geoff Miller, a member of the North Wales Jamaica Society who runs Cegin Caribi from his home in Holyhead, is providing a real taste of Jamaica, bringing memories of his home in Jamaica to Bangor.
At its heart is a local ambition: bringing together people who live, work and study in Bangor, alongside community organisations, to make friends and support projects undertaken by volunteers from across the city’s communities.
The anniversary is an opportunity to give that ambition fresh momentum, welcome new faces and explore what people can achieve together.
Special guest Jackie Pennant, an active member of North Wales Jamaica Society who lives in Florida, is flying in to spend time with the group in Wales. She will share news of her work in Pennants, Clarendon, Jamaica, where she has been helping to address urgent challenges facing schools and the wider community.
The morning will celebrate four milestones: one year of One World Café; two years of the Building Bridges of Friendship and Families Together Taith Welsh Government-funded exchanges between Jamaica and Wales; three years of civic links between Bangor and May Pen, Clarendon; and four years of Bangor University’s Hot Meals Project.
Together, these projects connect international friendship with practical community action—from sharing experiences across countries to helping people closer to home.
Local civic representatives have been invited, but the gathering is also an invitation to residents, students, volunteers and community groups to meet one another and help shape what comes next. Those interested in supporting One World Café are particularly welcome.
Jamaican brunch will be served at 10.30am, followed by welcome and introductions at 11am, and updates and presentations from 11.15am until noon.
Please confirm attendance for catering purposes by texting 07711 569 489.
