The doors of one of Bangor’s biggest and most popular high street stores, Woolworths, closed for the final time 10 years ago.

On 17 December 2008, administrators announced that all 807 Woolworths stores across the UK would close by 5 January 2009, with 27,000 job losses and debts of £385m.

50 jobs were lost at the Bangor store and many say Bangor High Street has never been the same.

Despite the sad news the Bangor branch didn’t go without a bang, offering up to 80% off in the closing down sale, the queues were huge with people waiting up to half an hour to be served.

The clearance sale also saw stock and fixtures and fittings being sold at discount prices. Customers were able to buy items such as staff lockers and the metal baskets they were filling up with bargains.

The vacant building was soon to become ‘Boots’ but Woolworths still holds a special place in the hearts of Bangor shoppers.
