Iolo Williams will join Dr Cathleen Thomas (RSPB) and Holly Peek (Red Squirrels Trust Wales) during red squirrel awareness week for an evening of talks at Pontio in Bangor.
Throughout the evening there will be discussions about different wildlife conflicts and crimes that are impacting our wildlife today and some of the steps taken to address them.
Iolo Williams is an ex-RSPB Wales species officer, TV and radio presenter, author, wildlife tour leader and above all else a naturalist. He has spent many years in the field protecting what he loves, nature. Iolo will talk about some of the wonderful birds he has come across during his RSPB days and the wildlife crimes he has witnessed.
Dr Cathleen Thomas is a Senior Project Manager at the RSPB and leads the Hen Harrier LIFE project. She will tell us about the amazing journeys of our skydancers, and the stories of some of our satellite tagged welsh hen harriers.
Holly Peek, Red Squirrel Ranger, will give an update on the North Wales red squirrel projects and to highlight the threats our red squirrels are facing.
Holly said: “ We now have some 800 red squirrels living on Anglesey, they have even gone over the Menai Strait, by the bridge or by swimming. They can now be found on the mainland in Bangor, in places like Bethesda, they have even been seen as far as the Clocaenog woodland near Ruthin.
“Just 20 years ago there were only about 40 on the island, so their numbers have increased in a short time.
“The red squirrels have also survived the squirrel pox epidemic which occurred at the end of 2017, luckily we haven’t seen any more cases since then.
“Much of the squirrels success has been down to the work of RSTW, volunteers and the public, helping us to keep an eye on them, and keeping us informed.”
Its sure to be a very informative and entertaining evening, both celebrating the great work done by volunteers and also highlighting current issues our wildlife face.
During the evening there will also be a raffle to raise money for Red Squirrels Trust Wales and information stalls of local wildlife charities and businesses.
Doors open at 6pm, talks start at 6.30pm and will be given in English.
