An iconic tree Fig Tree in Bangor has been saved and relocated.
Local residents had expressed fears for the future of the tree, which was planted in the sea wall at Hirael by soldiers during the second world war, when the promenade hosted a prisoner of war camp.
With the commencement of work to improve the flood defences at Hirael and due to the position of the tree in the sea wall, contractors were left with no other option but to try and save the tree and relocate it.
A Cyngor Gwynedd Spokesperson said: “The fig tree in question was previously growing out of the existing sea wall which is currently in the process of being replaced by a new flood wall – which will provide enhanced flood protection for 194 residential and commercial properties in Hirael.
“Unfortunately, due to the tree’s position there was no option but to translocate it to a different location. The tree was translocated in September under arboricultural supervision and is now located in the grassed area south of the Beach Road East carpark.
“Prior to translocation the tree was heavily pruned to reduce stress, which will hopefully increase the chances that the translocation will be successful. Cuttings were also taken prior to moving the tree.”
