Planning has been submitted to develop the former G Williams & Son Butchers shop on Bangor High Street, known locally as ‘Johnny 6’, into two apartments and an ice cream parlour on the lower floor.

The Proposed development of 238 High St would see two apartments created, one on the first floor and one on the second. This will necessitate a two storey extension on the rear of the building to accommodate an additional bedroom for each apartment and a reworked access staircase and entrance to the apartments.

The ground floor will be made into an ice cream shop, where it will house two seating areas and a shop floor at the front. An external seating area will also be situated to the rear, on the same level as the apartment entrance.

The outdoor seating area will be accessed by the ground floor seating area via an internal spiral staircase with roof top enclosure and also from the side ally way entrance. The shop front is also to be adapted to create point of sale hatch and increased shop window frontage whilst retaining the pilasters, pediments and fascias.

The butchers shop closed in 2018 after the company went into administration. The family run business had been trading in Bangor since 1870 and were famous for their quality meats and home made sausages & burgers.

Despite reopening later the same year, the business only remained open until 2019 before closing permanently.

The property was put up for auction in July 2020 with a guide price of £75,000, despite not selling at auction the property sold post auction.
