Do you have memories relating to the Britannia Bridge, especially the 1970 fire and the subsequent rebuild or any other home movie footage from the period.

The footage is for a documentary on S4C and the BBC celebrating the history of the Britannia Bridge.

The Bridge over the Menai Strait went on fire on 23 May 1970 when a group of teenagers accidentally caused the fire. The bridge, which had stood for 120 years, was virtually destroyed, severing Anglesey’s rail link with the mainland. Trains were running again between Anglesey and the mainland within 18 months, however, it was 10 years before the new road above the railway opened.

Rondo Media, a Caernarfon based production company are now looking for home movie footage of the Britannia Bridge, Menai Bridge and the surrounding area from the 1960s to the present day.

The footage could be from boats on the Menai Strait, footage of the fire, the rebuild of the bridge or the re-opening ceremony, anything which gives a sense of place or time.

The production company are also interested in speaking to people who have been involved any way with the bridge over the years, especially eyewitnesses to the fire and people who were involved in the rebuild.
