Two young men have raised over £11,000 for Alaw Ward at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, to thank the staff there for caring for their mothers.

Iago Rhys, from Tremadog, and Tomos Elis of Pant Glas – both aged 17 – completed a huge challenge in July by completing the ‘3000 Peak Challenge’, the 16 peaks over 3,000 thousand feet in height, in just 24 hours.

Siân, Iago’s mother, received special care in the Alaw Ward while battling a cruel illness, before her untimely death in June at the age of 49. Elin, Tomos’s mother, continues to receive treatment and care there.

Their challenge began with Gareth Patchett (a former sports teacher of Iago and Tomos at Ysgol Eifionydd) and Iago’s uncle, Meirion, on Grib Goch on Sunday 25 July at 4.00 hours.

They completed the challenge at Rheadr Fawr, Abergwyngregyn, shortly after midnight. Family members and friends of both families kept them company on different parts of the challenge.

The young men and their families are extremely grateful to all those who have contributed to the fund raising efforts and very grateful to their former teacher Gareth Patchett for his guidance and support before and during the journey.

For anyone wishing to contribute, they can do so via the following page http://ow.ly/JVpk50GEmhg until the end of October.

A spokesperson for Awyr Las said: “Congratulations to Iago and Tomos for achieving a feat and a half and for raising a very worthy amount of money for a case that is very close to the heart of many in the area.”
