Free eco-friendly menstrual products are available for those in need throughout Gwynedd as a way of tackling period poverty and to raise awareness of the benefits of eco-friendly products.
Whilst stocks are available, there is an opportunity to order free re-usable menstrual products through Gwynedd Council’s Library Services. This is part of a wider project – that is funded through a Welsh Government grant – which also sees products also being provided for girls through schools in the county.
Councillor Nia Jeffreys, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for equality matters, said: “Period poverty is an equality issue that we as a Council take seriously.
“Having ready access to menstrual products is something many of us take for granted but for women and girls on low incomes not being able to afford menstrual products leads to embarrassment and feelings of humiliation – this simply isn’t right.
“We’re proud to be able to offer access to eco-friendly menstrual products through Gwynedd Council’s Library Service – making an application is easy on the Council website. This is also part of a wider project where products are also being provided for Gwynedd’s young women thorough the county’s schools.
“It is also fantastic that the scheme is promoting eco-friendly menstrual products which are better for the environment and cut down on unnecessary waste like plastic, that’s can be difficult to recycle.”
There are a range of different products available, from period pants, to re-usable pads that you can wash. Many of these products can be expensive at first to buy or to try if it’s not suitable for you personally. The Period Product Scheme is free, and a great way of testing the products to see what products are best for you.
There are a range of products that are available to order here www.gwynedd.llyw.cymru/menstrualproducts – the products are sealed in a paper bag, and you can be picked- up from a library, or the Library Services can deliver them to your home (for free). You do not need to be a member of the library to order the products.
You can also order by calling our Library Services on 01286 679463, or send an email to LLCaernarfon@gwynedd.llyw.cymru to make an order.
