After 25 years at the helm, the owner of one of North Wales’ most prominent sound and lighting companies is stepping back and looking for a successor to take over the business.
Arwel Hughes is a familiar face within the events community. He founded MAD Sound and Lighting in 2000, following his early days as a DJ at the Octagon night club in Bangor. Since then, the company has supported major events across the region, including the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Sesiwn Fawr in Dolgellau and the Eryri Marathon.
But after more than a quarter of a century in the industry, he is ready to hand over responsibility for the next chapter in of the business to someone else.
“The company has been a huge part of my life since my twenties. I’m now in my fifties, a father of two young children, and want to focus on our main family business – in funeral services” said Arwel, explaining his decision to sell MAD.
“It’s incredibly rewarding and exciting work. You meet all kinds of people while being part of very special events and occasions. But it’s also demanding, with long and unsociable hours that are difficult with a young family.
“It’s been a privilege to build and run MAD,” he said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with leading artists such as Boy George, Boney M and Max Boyce, as well as almost every artist in the Welsh music scene over the past two decades.”
The sale of MAD is an opportunity to acquire an established, well-respected sound and lighting company with a strong regional reputation. Discussions are already underway with a potential buyer, and Arwel is hopeful the right person will come forward to realise the company’s full potential.
“MAD has been part of so many memories and stories across North Wales,” he said. “I would love to see that continue. The infrastructure, reputation and experience are all in place for someone to take the company to the next level.”
“I’m confident the business will continue to thrive under new ownership. We’ve built a brand known for professionalism and quality. The market is still there, but it needs someone with the drive and vision to take it forward.”
With strong foundations, an established client base and continued demand in the live events sector, the business is well positioned for the next phase under new ownership.
