Proposals for phase 2 at ‘Y Bae’ in Bangor to be Unveiled
Watkin Jones have announced there will be a public exhibition and consultation, on the further development of the former Dickies Boatyard site, at Beach Road in Bangor.
The site now known as ‘Y Bae’ already has 72 properties, consisting of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and 3 and 4 bedroom houses and townhouses.
In January 2015, Mark Watkin Jones, as Chief Operating Officer, said: “We have phase two at Dickies Boatyard in Bangor. We are looking at how we develop that site, I think that part will be a quite spectacular site once we get that going. We are still working up the planning but we think it will be about 40 to 50 units.
“We need to add some sort of commercial aspect to make it a destination and have walkways around the perimeter to add value and link it through to the pier. Those are the things we are looking at and through consultation trying to decide what we do to make this attractive as possible. Flood protection work for this project will only benefit the whole of Hirael, the works we have to do strengthens the whole defence work for the area. It helps and hopefully it will be seen positively.”
However, in November 2015, he announced that the Bangor-based developers were no longer pursuing new development opportunities in Gwynedd due to numerous issues with planning in the county. Mark Watkin Jones said at the time: “we are working through our current schemes but we are not looking for new land and opportunities here.”
He said his point was illustrated by opposition to the application to raise flood defence levels to undertake phase two of the Dickies boatyard scheme in Bangor.
He said: “This will improve the flood defence of Hirael whilst we develop our overall proposals for the site. Why would they want to object to flood defence works? This is a classic example of serial objecting regardless of the merit of a proposal so how can businesses be persuaded to invest locally when this is the attitude?”
Plans for the 1.5m flood defence at the site, which had been withdrawn, have since been re-submitted and have now been approved by Gwynedd Council.
The exhibition and consultation will take place between 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm on Thursday 26th of October 2017 at the Hirael Community Centre, Ambrose Street, Bangor.
Watkin Jones Homes and the architects will be in attendance at the meeting, answering questions on the proposals and setting out the proposed timescales.
