Members of the local community have reacted with disgust after several bulbs were stolen from the light display on Bangor’s Garth Pier.
The ‘Light up Christmas’ event combines digital tributes and a real-life display of 2,000 lights on Bangor Pier, which helps hundreds of people across North Wales and beyond to remember absent loved ones, while also raising money for Awyr Las, the North Wales NHS charity.
Hundreds of people attended the switch on event last Friday, 10 December, and the lights will remain on the pier until the new year.
15 bulbs were removed from the display between Friday night and Monday morning. The bulbs will need to be replaced before the next light up on Thursday evening.
A member of the Friends of Bangor Garth Pier Facebook group posted: “Such a beautiful event on Friday, just an absolute shame that people feel they can steal the bulbs off the pier, 15 gone now since Friday evening. All the effort and time put in by everyone. Such a shame.”
In response one group member said: “Why why why??? It probably won’t fit anything they’ve got-so what’s the reason for it-unbelievable. After all the work gone into it-hope they have a conscience.” While another group member said: “Let’s hope the ones that took them will have some conscience and return them and put a good donation in the box.”
A spokesperson from Awyr Las said: “The Awyr Las Support Team was sad to hear from Pier volunteers that 15 bulbs have gone missing from the light display since Friday. Volunteers are working hard to get these replaced in time for the next late night opening on Thursday.”
