Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party are the Welsh winners in the European parliamentary elections, winning two of the four Welsh seats with 32.5% of the vote. Plaid Cymru were second with 19.6% and Labour beaten into third place with 15.3%, winning one parliamentary seat each and retaining their MEPs.

Wales’s MEPs are Nathan Lee Gill (Brexit Party), James Wells (Brexit Party), Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru) and Jacqueline Jones (Labour).

Out of 64 UK MEPs declared so far, Mr Farage’s party has won 28, the Lib Dems 15, Labour 10, Greens seven, the Conservatives three and Plaid Cymru one.

Across Wales, the Brexit Party had 271,404 votes, with Plaid Cymru second with 163,928 and Labour third with 127,833 votes.

It’s the first time Plaid have beaten Labour in an election across Wales and only the second such defeat for Labour in a century. The Liberal Democrats finished in fourth place, ahead of the Conservatives, who gained just 6.5% of the vote and lost their only Welsh seat in Brussels.

The Brexit Party topped the polls in 19 out of 22 Welsh councils, with Plaid Cymru coming top in Gwynedd, Ceredigion and Anglesey. Plaid won the Gwynedd poll with a 10,000+ majority, on Anglesey, Plaid defeated the Brexit Party by just 353 votes.

Following the declaration in Haverfordwest on Sunday night, Nathan Gill said the result was a ”very strong message from Wales – we want our Brexit and we want it now”.

Jill Evans retained her seat for Plaid Cymru for a fifth term, she was first elected to the European Parliament in June 1999.

Plaid leader Adam Price said the result showed ”the tectonic plates of Welsh politics are shifting”.

He added: ”For generations, the Westminster establishment has taken Wales for granted. And for the first time in the history of Plaid Cymru, we have now beaten Labour in a national election. Be under no illusion that something very exciting is happening in Wales.”
