Bangor, Gwynedd – 2025 will mark a monumental milestone in the history of Bangor, as the city celebrates its 1500th anniversary.
Founded by St Deiniol in 525AD, Bangor is the oldest Bangor in recorded history, and the city is preparing for a yearlong celebration like no other. The City of Bangor will commemorate this significant event with a series of exciting and dynamic celebrations throughout 2025, designed to showcase the rich history of the city and look ahead to a bright future.
The celebrations will begin with two events at Bangor Cathedral. On November 30th, 2024, the Cathedral will hold a service marking the start of the Bangor 1500 celebrations and the beginning of the Advent season. Following this, on December 1st, 2024, the Cathedral will hold a Eucharist service, offering a moment for reflection and unity as the city prepares for a year of celebration.
The official kick-off to the yearlong celebrations will take place the following month, on New Year’s Eve, with a spectacular fireworks display over Bangor’s historic Pier. This breathtaking display will usher in the new year and officially launch the Bangor 1500 celebrations, marking the beginning of a year packed with events, activities, and community engagement.
At the heart of the celebrations is the spirit of community and heritage. Bangor City Council has worked closely with local organisations, schools, and community groups to create a vibrant and diverse range of events that will honour the city’s past, present, and future. Over the centuries, Bangor has grown not only in its historical significance but also in cultural richness and diversity, with people from all walks of life coming together to create a dynamic, thriving city. This milestone year will celebrate not only the city’s fascinating history, from its founding by St Deiniol to its vibrant cultural and intellectual contributions, but also the bright future that lies ahead for Bangor and its people.
Cllr Eirian Williams Roberts says “One of the highlights of the Bangor 1500 celebration preparations was the design competition that engaged children from across the city. In July, schoolchildren from Year 5 and 6 were invited to design a logo for the celebrations, with the brief focusing on the origin of the name “Bangor,” which is rooted in the tradition of the wattle fence. The response was overwhelming, with over 170 entries from eight local primary schools.
After much deliberation, the winner was chosen…Victor Murlikiewicz from Ysgol Faenol, whose thoughtful design reflects the city’s heritage. His logo, which depicts a wattle fence using the striking red, gold, and blue colours from Bangor’s Coat of Arms, will be the face of the Bangor 1500 celebrations throughout the year. This design not only pays homage to Bangor’s past but also symbolises unity and pride for the future”
Victor’s achievement highlights the incredible talent and creativity within the community and is a perfect example of how Bangor’s schools are playing a central role in shaping the celebrations. The logo will be featured on all event materials, merchandise, and promotional items throughout the year, and Victor’s design will be forever tied to this historic milestone in the city’s history.
The excitement surrounding Bangor 1500 will extend beyond the logo reveal, with a year of diverse events and activities set to take place across the city and surrounding areas. The celebrations will include cultural festivals, parades, music events, sports competitions, and historical re-enactments that will bring the city’s vibrant past to life. While full details of the year’s calendar of events are still to be revealed, residents and visitors alike can expect a year packed with unforgettable experiences designed to engage and inspire all generations.
City Director, Martin Hanks “Bangor 1500 is not just about commemorating the past but also about building community spirit and fostering a sense of pride in this historic city. Schools, local youth groups, and organisations will be invited to participate in various projects, celebrations, and events throughout the year, ensuring that the entire community is involved in this historic journey.
As we approach the start of this remarkable year of celebration, Bangor City Council encourages everyone to mark their calendars and join in the festivities. Bangor 1500 promises to be an unforgettable year, with something for everyone, whether through attending events, participating in activities, or sharing in the joy of this significant milestone.
Join us as we celebrate the City of Bangor’s rich history, its vibrant present, and its bright future!”
