A special event was held in Maesgeirchen, Bangor, last week, which celebrated two local boxing legends.
Brian ‘Bach’ Williams, finally moved into his new Boxing Club after 30 years of training young people in a less-than-ideal facility. The community was thrilled to attend the opening day festivities and explore the new club.
Brian was recently given the ‘Freedom of the City of Bangor’ in recognition of his decades of hard work training local youngsters in the community.
Peter Whitby from Maes Ni expressed his delight in being part of this project. He stated, “It has been an absolute pleasure to work towards creating something that should have been done long ago.
“The most important thing is that we finally achieved our goal, and through collaboration with volunteers and the community, we have built something that will hopefully endure for generations to come. Maesgeirchen is where legends are made.”
In addition to this momentous occasion, local boxing legend Dave Davies now has a permanent home for his impressive collection of trophies.
Nigel Pickavance shared his gratitude, saying, “First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Community of Bangor for coming together and raising sufficient funds to purchase the two display cabinets. Ten years ago, Dave Davies approached the Partneriaeth Maesgeirchen Partnership with a request to display his trophies, including his renowned Commonwealth final silver medal from 1970.
“Naturally, we agreed to his request, but unfortunately, we lacked a suitable space to showcase them. We made a promise that one day we would find a permanent home for these cherished items. It is truly fitting and timely that Dave’s trophies now have a dedicated section within the new Club
“This has been a remarkable occasion, and Dave Davies’s unwavering dedication and hard work will undoubtedly inspire future generations of champions at the new Club.”
