Dr Clair Doloriet, a lecturer at Bangor University’s Business School, will be ‘Braving the Shave’ for Macmillan Cancer Support next week. She will shave her head for the charity on 20th September and has already passed her original fundraising target.
Clair said: “After sponsoring quite a few very worthy causes in my time, I thought it was about time I did something. I have (in my opinion) a nice flock of thick curly hair, and I like it, it makes me feel nice, feminine and above all, it keeps me warm. I can’t imagine what it must be like to, not only have to deal with a diagnosis of cancer, but then also lose your hair during the treatment.”
“Our hair often is what defines us and makes us who we are. It is part of our identity and can express who we are, our values and our style. It gives us confidence, makes us feel beautiful and ultimately makes us nice and warm during the autumn and winter months. So I’m going to brave the shave, show solidarity with those who have not had a choice in losing their hair and also normalising shaved heads for females”
Over 9,000 people have braved the shave in support of Macmillan Cancer Support this year raising nearly £1.5million.
Clair is dedicating her head shave in memory of her former student at Bangor University Kieran Whitworth, she said: “This is for my wonderful student at Bangor University, who fought so hard and with such dignity and smiled his beautiful smile throughout. Kieran Whitworth and his amazingly strong widow Elizabeth, who has humbled me with her courage, her strength and her determination to face life, in the face of such great loss. You both are amazing”
