An online ‘Reclaim the Night Vigil’ will be held in Bangor tonight, Wednesday 17 March, following the tragic murders of Sarah Everard and Wenjing Lin.
Members of the Bangor and Dyffryn Ogwen community are organising the event, in partnership with Bangor University’s Students’ Union, which will not only remember Sarah and Wenjing, but also for all women who feel unsafe, who go missing from our streets, and who face violence every day.
A statement on the Facebook event page said: “We’ve all been following the tragic case of Sarah Everard over the last week and have been saddened to hear the news of her death. Here in Wales, the murder of Wenjing Lin demonstrates that violence against women is alive in our communities, and needs to be challenged.
“For this vigil we are asking everyone to light a candle for 8pm, and place it somewhere visible. In a window, on your doorstep and/or in front of a camera that can link to this zoom meeting (link to be shared on the day).
“Each candle that joins the zoom meeting will be livestreamed into this event. Feel free to place messages or placards with your candle, or by using a digital banner.
“During the vigil/livestream there will be readings, and then after the webcast ends, those who have joined the event on zoom will be able to say a few words if they would like to after the livestream ends.
“Please join us for this vigil to try and bring light to these dark days. Lets come together to call for change, to call for the right to feel safe, and to mourn the women who have lost their lives to violence.”
