Bangor is set to sizzle in the heat today before what could be the warmest June day for more than 40 years tomorrow.

Temperatures will hit 20°C in Bangor today and 27°C on Thursday, but the dry weather won’t last long, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected on Friday and Saturday.

The hot spell has raised concerns about wildfires and the wellbeing of the elderly. Age UK warned people with elderly relatives should make sure they keep cool during the lockdown, .

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said that UV levels will be “reaching eight across many places.

“That’s about as high as it gets really in the UK. The sun is as strong as it gets at the moment because we’re so close to the solstice.

“We’ve got peak sun strength, clear skies, plenty of sunshine – they’re the perfect ingredients for high UV.”

Temperatures will remain high on Friday 19°C but with more of a breeze making things slightly more comfortable.
