Bangor is set to benefit from a series of regeneration and economic development projects after Cyngor Gwynedd’s Cabinet approved a package of schemes worth more than £6 million through the new Local Growth Fund.
The funding, provided by the Welsh Government, will support ten projects across Gwynedd aimed at boosting the economy, creating opportunities for residents and investing in key places across the county.
Among the key commitments for Bangor is the Bangor City Centre Programme, which will fund detailed planning to explore how health, wellbeing and leisure facilities can play a central role in regenerating the city’s commercial centre.
The project will also support the next stage of the business case for the proposed Menai Health and Wellbeing Centre, while helping safeguard assets to support the use of health, wellbeing and leisure as a catalyst for regenerating Bangor city centre.
Bangor University is also a partner in county-wide initiatives to support businesses to innovate and grow, while a talent voucher scheme will encourage graduates to remain in or return to Gwynedd by gaining work experience with local employers.
The wider programme also includes proposals to convert vacant commercial space at Penrhyn Glandon into four new business units, providing additional opportunities for local enterprise.
The Cabinet report also identifies the Bangor City Centre Programme as one of Gwynedd’s priority schemes for future regional investment beyond 2026/27, alongside the proposed Trawsfynydd Innovation, Business and Skills Centre.
Overall, Cyngor Gwynedd has committed £6.3 million through the Local Growth Fund during 2026/27, with projects focusing on supporting businesses, helping people into employment and investing in places to strengthen Gwynedd’s economy.
Council leader Councillor Nia Jeffreys said the funding would help deliver projects that strengthen Gwynedd’s economy while ensuring communities across the county benefit.
Cabinet Member for Economy and Community, Councillor Medwyn Hughes, added that the projects align with the Council’s Economic Strategy, Area Regeneration Plans and vision for a prosperous Gwynedd, while complementing other investment programmes already underway.
