Bangor Rugby Club has launched a Crowdfunding page to raise money for a fence around their pitches and clubhouse, following numerous problems at the club.
The club has suffered incidents of vandalism and dog fouling on the pitches, which is placing the health of players at risk.
The aim of the fundraising project is to provide new fencing around the clubhouse and its 3 pitches at a cost of £10,000, to prevent vandalism and dog fouling on the pitches.
The problems at the club have become worse since Covid, with more members of the public using the pitches as a place to walk their dogs, with some owners not picking up the dog waste, which is putting the health of the players, especially the younger players.
The rugby club in Bangor was founded in 1880 and currently runs a 1st XV and 7 junior sides with a total of over 180 participants.
The Club aims to create a welcoming, friendly and safe environment where children and families can enjoy all aspects of the club, from on field playing to the off field social aspect in a warm hospitable friendly clubhouse.
Toxocariasis is a rare infection caused by roundworm parasites and can sometimes cause serious problems like difficulty breathing or loss of vision. Humans can catch it from handling soil or sand contaminated with infected animal faeces. Roundworm parasites are most commonly found in cats, dogs and foxes, and usually affect young children.
In recent years travellers have also gained access to the grounds and caused considerable damage. In addition, there have been incidents of motorbikes riding on the pitches leaving large tracks that have caused considerable damage to the pitch.
The club have erected signs but they are largely ignored and with the ground being in such a rural area, it is impossible to monitor the facility 24 hours a day.
The club now feel the only way to solve the problems is to erect fencing to prevent unlawful access to the clubhouse and pitches when it’s not open. This fencing will assist the club in their aims of providing a safe environment for the players and the wider community.
