Plans are under way to create a Bangor Pier Enterprise Group comprising the City of Bangor Council, the private businesses that operate on the pier, and a new community volunteers group – the Bangor Pier Volunteers.

The Grade II listed structure, which originally opened in 1896, is 460 m in length and is the second-longest pier in Wales, and the ninth longest in the UK. Having recently undergone major restoration work at a cost of £1million, the pier is currently closed due to the coronavirus restrictions.

There are already several organisations within the city of Bangor for people who appreciate Garth Pier, providing a useful forum via social media for sharing stories, posting photos, and discussions on the possible options for the development of the pier. However, it is now felt that a community ‘working group’ should be established, with all of its members actively participating in a wide range of tasks.

Volunteers don’t need specific qualifications, as most people have skills of one kind or another, from having a confident and sympathetic approach when meeting and talking to other people, practical DIY skills, experience of sales and marketing, presentation skills, Information Technology expertise, and many others. However, full training will be given to all volunteers as part of an induction programme.

In order to provide a formal structure for the group, the most appropriate model for a community group which will work closely with the local authority.

Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can send an informal expression of interest via email to the following email address: bangorpierenterprisegroup@gmail.com
