A Bangor nurse has setup her own business to help people with issues relating to earwax.
Emily Moore is a Registered Adult Nurse with 14 years NHS experience and offers the latest and safest techniques to assess patients and painlessly remove earwax.
Earwax is produced by the ear as part of its natural process of cleaning and protection and in the majority of cases it does not need to be removed. Sometimes however, wax can build up in the ear canal and cause problems.
Impacted and/or occluding wax can cause symptoms such as:
- hearing loss
- discomfort
- earache
- itching
- feeling blocked/muffled
- tinnitus
Traditionally, earwax was removed by the use of water injected into the ear with a large syringe. The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), which approves treatments for the NHS, now advises to use suction devices.
Syringing can damage the delicate skin of the ear canal and the tympanic membrane (eardrum) itself and can sometimes lead to infection, therefore is no longer recommended.
Microsuction involves the use of a microscope to look into the ear canal, providing a clear sight of any wax that needs removing. This makes the removal procedure easier, quicker and safer because it is less invasive.
Earwax management is no longer part of the GP contract – with some GP practices either advising patients to self-refer to a private earwax practitioner such as Emily or alternatively, under some circumstances patients can be referred to the ENT department in the hospital where they may be placed on a waiting list for the procedure.
The number of hospital referrals has been increasing year on year, resulting in extended NHS waiting times and added NHS pressures, a problem Emily hopes to help alleviate.
Emily said: “I am a Registered Nurse with 14 years NHS experience and I’m pleased to offer microsuction earwax removal in the comfort of your own home or in my clinic in Bangor.
“Microsuction uses gentle suction to clean the ear. It’s the safest method to remove wax from the ear. Research has concluded that microsuction earwax removal is better and safer than the traditional methods of irrigation and syringing.
“Many who have had the procedure have told me they enjoy the sensation! And it sometimes only takes minutes. A lot of clients report instant relief of their symptoms which is both satisfying for the client and gives me great job satisfaction too!
“Despite my service being independent I have a strong philosophy of providing a safe, effective and affordable service accessible to all.
“I work from my clinic in Bangor and I also offer mobile services covering Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy county. This has been particularly helpful for patients with mobility or transport problems or for those who prefer being treated within their own environment.”
