Bangor could experience its hottest day on record on Thursday, with the Met Office forecasting temperatures of up to 35°C as an exceptional heatwave grips much of the UK.

The Met Office has issued an Amber Extreme Heat Warning for Bangor and much of England and Wales, warning of exceptionally warm temperatures both during the day and overnight.

According to the Met Office forecast for Bangor (Gwynedd), temperatures are expected to climb steadily throughout Thursday, reaching 35°C during the afternoon before remaining above 30°C well into the evening.

Historical weather data published by AQI indicates the highest temperature previously recorded in Bangor was 31°C on 18 July 2022 during the record-breaking UK heatwave.

If Thursday’s forecast is realised, Bangor could exceed that figure by as much as 4°C.

In its warning, the Met Office said temperatures across the affected areas are expected to widely exceed 30°C, with the hottest locations potentially reaching 38°C to 40°C.

The warning states: “Hot and humid weather is expected to continue through the middle of the week, with exceptionally warm temperatures both day and night.”

While Bangor’s coastal location on the Menai Strait typically helps moderate temperatures, forecasters are predicting unusually light winds and prolonged sunshine, allowing temperatures to rise well above seasonal averages.

Residents are being advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives.

The heat is expected to break on Friday, with temperatures forecast to fall back to around 28°C before returning to more typical June levels over the weekend.
