The local community came together during Dementia Action Week (19–25 May 2025) to raise £630 for Uned Aber Plas Hedd, a specialist dementia care unit in Maesgeirchen, Bangor. The cheque was presented today to Carys and the team at Plas Hedd in recognition of the vital work they provide for people living with dementia.
Dementia Action Week Activities organised as part of the national awareness campaign, Dementia Action Week was marked locally by several impactful events:
Bangor Pier Walk: Held on Monday 19 May, this relaxed and inclusive walk started at Byw’n Iach Bangor before heading out to the pier and back. Organised by Gwenda Hughes of Ffeind Cyf in partnership with Dementia Actif Gwynedd, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, and the North Wales Memory Pathway, the walk attracted participants of all ages, including carers and dogs, and concluded with tea and friendly conversation.
Dylan a Neil Gig at Cae Garnedd: On Thursday 22 May, a free musical afternoon featuring Dylan and Neil entertained supporters while raising funds for the cause.
Additionally, the campaign was supported by donations via a dedicated JustGiving page, which, combined with funds raised at the events, helped reach the final total of £630.
The presentation was held at Plas Hedd, where representatives from Ffeind, a person-centred support service in North Gwynedd, handed over the donation to Carys and the care team. The funds will bolster the unit’s ability to support individuals living with dementia and their families.
Carys said: “Thanks a million to everyone who donated to a very worthy local cause. Your support across the pier walk, concert, and online contributions means so much to Plas Hedd and the families they help.”
They added special thanks to every walker, musician, donor, volunteer, and community member involved.
Plas Hedd Care Home, located in Maesgeirchen, functions as a dementia-specific care unit. It was adapted in 2020 to accommodate up to seven people with dementia, with enhanced facilities to deliver specialist and compassionate care
With nearly 982,000 people living with dementia across the UK, a figure expected to rise substantially, community fundraising activities such as those held in Bangor play an essential role in supporting local care services and boosting awareness of the condition.
