The Chinese New Year celebrations planned for Bangor on Saturday 1st February, have been cancelled following the devastating outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China.

A dragon parade was due to take place on Bangor High Street followed by a Chinese Gala at Pontio theatre.

A Statement on behalf of the Bangor University Confucius Institute said “The Lunar new year is one of the most important events celebrated by Chinese people across the world which sadly has been overshadowed by the outbreak of the coronavirus.

“Our hearts go with our Chinese friends, colleagues and everyone affected by this dreadful coronavirus both at home and abroad. After discussions with members of the Chinese community in north Wales, and out of solidarity and concern for friends and colleagues in China it has been decided to cancel the Chinese New Year Celebrations in Bangor on Saturday 1st February.”

Pontio theatre also confirmed the gala would also be cancelled. A statement read: “This announcement means that the Gala Concert planned for Theatr Bryn Terfel at 1pm on Saturday 1st February will no longer go ahead.

“Customers who have reserved tickets for the free gala are currently being contacted with this update.”

Novel Coronavirus

Nearly 2,000 new cases of novel coronavirus were recorded in China in the past 24 hours, raising the worldwide total to nearly 9,800, according to Chinese and World Health Organization data. 213 people have died from the disease.

The vast majority of the cases are inside China; about 100 cases have been confirmed in 19 other countries, while the first cases have been confirmed in the UK, with two people being treated for the disease in Newcastle.

Earlier this week Bangor University advised staff and students not to travel to China following the outbreak of the virus.
