Bangor Cathedral Foodbank have appealed for donations following a surge in demand for certain items at local supermarkets after the Coronavirus outbreak.

The Foodbank are in need of toilet rolls, hand sanitiser and UHT milk. A statement on the Cathedral Foodbank said: “We realise that these are now being rationed in many shops. If you are considering donating something, maybe you could buy one for yourself and one for the foodbank?”

The Food Bank is entirely dependent on donations and appealed that any items donated could be given directly to Bangor Cathedral or at one of the foodbank sessions in the Diocesan Offices (next to the Cathedral). The appeal noted: “If you put items in the supermarket collection points, they don’t come to Bangor Foodbank. They still go to families and people in need of course, but not in Bangor.”

Food Share Cancelled

On Sunday the Bangor Food Share was cancelled due to the lack of surplus at local supermarkets. The weekly scheme is run from the Plaid Cymru office on Bangor High Street and surplus from local supermarkets is distributed to anyone in need.

Cllr Steve Collings of Deiniol Ward in Bangor commented: “I’m sorry to say there won’t be one this week because there was no surplus bread to be found at any of the pick up points. First time this has happened in almost two years, but the supermarkets are currently experiencing rush after rush.

“I will be keeping my eye out through the week for a significant surplus and will have to do special, non-Sunday, one off food shares instead until things go back to normal.”
