The Awel y Môr offshore wind project consultation opened on 31 August and will be running until 11 October. As part of this, RWE Renewables has announced a series of online and outdoor information sessions allowing local residents the chance to meet the team and learn more about the project.

The Windfarm is being planned about 10.5km off the coast to the west of the existing Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm. A new collection of wind turbines, expected to be between 51 and 107 depending on their size, would cover an area of 106km2 from Colwyn Bay to Conwy. RWE expects to submit its application to the UK Government’s Planning Inspectorate in 2022.

The project team will be travelling across north Wales for 9 days, starting in the Rhyl area on Friday 24 September. Other locations include Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Llanfairfechan. The team will be visiting Bangor and Beaumaris on:

  • Saturday 2 October: Bangor High Street (by the clock tower) 10am – 6pm
  • Sunday 3 October: Beaumaris Green Car Park 10am – 6pm

In addition to this, the project team is also hosting a series of online information sessions where people can ask questions and find out more about the proposals. Further information on how to join these events can also be found on the project website with the dates confirmed as:

  • Wednesday 6 October: 1pm – 2.30pm
  • Saturday 9 October: 10am – 11.30am

Tamsyn Rowe, RWE Renewables said: “The upcoming information sessions are a great opportunity for local residents to come and meet members of the team and learn more about the project, whether it’s through one of our online sessions or outdoor events. I would encourage people to get involved with the project, and the full list of events will be available over the coming weeks on the project website.”

Awel y Môr presents a huge opportunity for Wales as it strives to reach its target of producing 70% of its electricity consumption from renewable energy sources by 2030. Offshore wind is one of the UK’s biggest growth industries and Awel y Môr will help ensure north Wales receives further investment in this area, bringing significant supply chain opportunities to the local economy. During construction, Gwynt y Môr Offshore Wind Farm invested £90M into Welsh businesses and since becoming fully operational, the wind farm has typically invested around £8M into the Welsh economy each year.
