Parents of children in the Glanadda area of Bangor have reacted angrily after a council worker was seen picking up used needles from the local park.
Following a Facebook post about the problem, a local resident commented: “Picking up needles from Glanadda Park. A decent police presence would help eradicate drug users from using/ dealing in our local park. I pity any child playing here. Start of the summer holidays and I will not allow my kids to play there for fear of getting pricked by a dirty needle.”
While another commented: “So angry about this. My little boy loves going to that park!!”
Residents have also raised concerns about anti-social behaviour and criminal activity in Hendre ward.
Local councillor Medwyn Hughes held a meeting with the Police last Wednesday in which Glanadda Cemetery, St David’s Church, Heol Dewi Park, the disused Minffordd Hospital, Donkey Lane and the Maes were all mentioned by residents as areas of concern.
Councillor Hughes said: “Both the Police and the Council are looking to install CCTV cameras and trying to find funding. Along with cutting back of some trees in the park to make the area more visible from roads. Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd are looking to cut back Donkey Lane.
“The Park is now being looked at closely by the Police and the Council, this follows an inspection of the park by North Wales Police plain clothes officers, who saw no evidence of drug usage although they have had reports of dealing there.
“The Police have restricted numbers but have made significant progress in the last month. If you know of criminal activity you can ring 101 anonymously.
“The Probation Service have been contacted regarding clearing St David’s Church and the Cathedral have been contacted again this year about issues at the back of the Church.”
