A new initiative is underway in Bangor to establish the Rotary Club of One World Bangor – a group designed to bring together people who have come to live, work, or study in the city, as well as anyone keen to support projects that connect different communities.
Alongside the club, organisers are also developing a One World Friends Group for those who prefer a more informal way of getting involved in activities that support life in the city and encourage friendships across Bangor’s diverse communities.
The venture is part of a national Rotary campaign to launch 100 new clubs across the UK, each focused on local service and community building. In Bangor, the initiative is being supported by members of the Rotary Club of Bangor, including Past President Derek Hainge and Rotarian Liz Millman, working alongside Dr Grace Oni.
Originally from Nigeria, Dr Oni now lives in Bangor with her family and maintains links with the Rotary eClub of Greater Nigeria. She currently serves as an Assistant District Governor and has been instrumental in shaping the new club.
The Rotary Club of One World Bangor has now achieved Provisional Status and will host its first formal event on Tuesday 30th September at 6.30pm in Penrhyn Hall, featuring a hot buffet and presentations about the group’s plans.
In the meantime, the team has already launched a weekly One World Café at Penrhyn Hall, open most Saturday mornings from 10am to 12pm when the venue is available. Earlier this month, Bangor’s Mayor, Cllr Merfyn Jones, and Mace Bearer John Chamberlain stopped by the café to congratulate the group on their efforts.
