On Saturday 16th August, the city centre will erupt with colour, music, joy and surprises as the Bangor Summer Festival 2025 transforms our streets into the biggest celebration the city has seen in decades — and it’s completely free to enjoy.
From brontosaurus encounters and booming reggae beats to towering Transformers and Lightning McQueen, this year’s festival is overflowing with family-friendly fun, hands-on activities, a Treasure Hunt and headline entertainment for all ages.
“This is about more than just putting on a show,” says Cllr Eirian Williams Roberts, one of the festival’s organisers. “It’s about creating memories for families who need something to look forward to — without breaking the bank. We’ve worked flat out to make sure this is something Bangor can be proud of.”
The Main Stage on the Storiel Green will host an all-day line-up of music from big-name tribute acts like Fearlessly Taylor and Oasish – est. 1995, alongside powerful Welsh talent including CELT and Sara Owen, and performances from community stars like Maes-G ShowZone and Tenovus Choir & Academi Westend Academy.
Over in Tan-y-Fynwent, families can dive into a world of play and creativity — from inflatables to circus skills and street performances. It’s a buzzing family zone where kids can let off steam, join in the fun, and discover something new around every corner. All this unfolds to the infectious rhythms of Freedom Soundsystem, bringing an all-day soundtrack of reggae, ska and soul that fills the air with good vibes and gets every generation moving.
Just across the way, Penrhyn Hall will offer a full afternoon of UV puppet shows for children, before transforming into a candle-lit venue for an atmospheric psychic night.
The interactive dinosaur experience on the High Street promises jaw-dropping moments as the 6.5m brontosaurus makes its way through the crowds.
Families can take selfies with Lightning McQueen, meet giant walkabout Transformers, and enjoy free activities like circus skills workshops, music-making with Codi’r To, face painting, glitter artists and more.
From sizzling Caribbean BBQ smoke drifting through the streets, to the rhythmic joy of steel pan drums, the air will be filled with the sounds, smells and tastes of celebration. Indulge in cheese-smothered fries, loaded doughnuts, burgers, hot dogs, and the sweet scent of candy floss floating from the funfair.
The artisan market will take over the High Street, while the charity and community stalls fill the Cathedral grounds with laughter, games and giveaways.
“This is the biggest event I’ve ever helped to organise — and I’ve been doing this for more than 20 years.” Says Cllr Nigel Pickavance. “It’s free, it’s for families, and it’s just what Bangor needs right now. Our High Street has had a tough time, and we want to fill it with people, laughter and life again.”
Carwyn Davies of Bangor City Council agrees: “We wanted to create something that didn’t just entertain – but uplifted. Something local families could enjoy together without worrying about ticket prices. It’s going to be unforgettable.”
So grab the kids, round up the grandparents, and invite your mates – because on Saturday 16th August, Bangor is where the magic happens.
And you don’t need a ticket. You just need to show up.
