Award-winning British director Ben Wheatley, whose bold and uncompromising work has helped define 21st-century UK cinema, will visit Pontio in Bangor this January for a special screening of his latest film, Bulk.

Wheatley is best known for a body of work that effortlessly bridges the gap between fiercely independent filmmaking and large-scale studio productions. From cult modern classics such as Kill List and Sightseers, through the striking adaptation of High-Rise, to blockbuster spectacle with The Meg 2: The Trench, Wheatley has built a reputation as one of Britain’s most distinctive cinematic voices.

Between major studio projects, the director consistently returns to the raw, inventive spirit of independent film. His newest feature, Bulk, is described as both an inspiration and a heartfelt tribute to the DIY ethos that has underpinned much of his career.

Sinema Pontio will host a special screening of Bulk, followed by an in-person Q&A with Wheatley himself. The film follows the aftermath of a disastrous string-theory experiment in which a scientist’s brane explodes, fracturing reality. Protagonist Corey Harlan must navigate a mysterious house where every door opens onto another world, guided only by the enigmatic dimensional being Aclima, as he searches for the scientist and the brane’s core.

With Bulk, Wheatley once again demonstrates how imagination, collaboration and resourceful craft can push filmmaking beyond conventional limits. Audiences will also have the chance to meet the director after the screening, with Wheatley selling tour T-shirts, zines, soundtracks and other items.

Bulk with Ben Wheatley takes place at Sinema Pontio on Saturday 31 January at 2pm. Tickets and further information are available via Pontio, with the film’s trailer also online.
