A milestone celebration took place at The Abbey Road Centre, known as Canolfan Abbey Road in Bangor to mark 40 years since the Centre officially opened its doors to the community in 1985.

Established to promote better mental health and wellbeing, the centre has supported thousands of local people over the decades and remains a cornerstone of care, connection, and community spirit in Arfon.

Chairperson Councillor John Wynn Jones opened the service, noting the success in longevity of the Centre and the work that we do.

“In this day and age, the need for the services of The Abbey Road Centre, when citizens feel differing pressures and tensions within their daily lives, has become critical and I as well as users thank the Staff for their help and commitment.”

The event brought together current staff, service users, partners and community supporters to reflect on the journey from its official opening by Baron Roberts of Conwy on the 7th of October 1985, to the vibrant and inclusive service it is today.

Over the past four decades, Canolfan Abbey Road has grown from a small local initiative into a key part of Bangor’s mental health and wellbeing network. Its work now includes counselling, therapeutic activities, social groups, and a community information library. Room hire and coworking spaces host key teams from BCUHB and Gwynedd Council that help sustain the Centre’s charitable work and keep access to professional support in the community.

Reflecting on the occasion, Fiona Owens, Chief Executive said: “Marking forty years of Abbey Road is about celebrating the strength of our community as much as the longevity of the Centre itself. Through changing times, our purpose has remained constant — to offer a safe, welcoming place where people can connect, recover, and thrive. This milestone belongs to everyone who has contributed over the years — our staff, volunteers, trustees, partners, and supporters — and it reminds us that mental health and wellbeing really is a collective achievement.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, guests shared memories of the early days of the Centre and their hopes for its future. The event also looked ahead to new developments in community wellbeing, including initiatives that continue to support the Five Ways to Wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, and give.

Canolfan Abbey Road continues to welcome new members of the public to its wide range of wellbeing activities, training sessions, and volunteer opportunities.
