Arfon Labour will announce new candidate for the 2019 General Election after Mary Gwen Griffiths Clarke announced that she is standing down due to ill health.
Ms Griffiths Clarke, who was the Labour candidate for Arfon in the 2017 General Election, narrowly lost to Plaid Cymru’s Hywel Williams by just 92 votes.
Plaid gained the seat in 2010 and held it in 2015; their victory in 2017 was the narrowest margin in Wales for the election.
In an announcement on Twitter today, Ms Griffiths Clarke said: “I have decided to step down from politics on health grounds to focus on my legal career and campaigning for better access to justice and equality. I wish you all the best UK Labour.”
A spokesperson for Arfon Constituency Labour Party said: “We wish Mary Gwen the best of luck as she takes steps to a legal career, and we would like to wish her better health for the future.
“At this crucial time selection of a new candidate will be underway and we hope that we will be able to officially launch our general election campaign on the 12th November.
“Every Labour member is vital for Real Change in Britain and we look forward to taking our campaign to the streets this winter, showing the constituency how we will stand up for Arfon in a way no one has before.”
The General Election is due to be held on 12 December 2019.
