The former St Gerard’s School in Bangor has been put up for sale just weeks after the independent school closed its doors for the final time.
The historic Ffriddoedd Road campus, which educated generations of children over more than a century, officially closed at the end of the summer term in early July. The 4.56-acre site is now being marketed by property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall.
The sales particulars describe the site as extending to approximately 4.56 acres (1.843 hectares) and comprising around 25,726 sq ft (2,390 sq m) of accommodation across the main school building and junior school. The property is being offered with price on application and is marketed as suitable for continued educational use or alternative redevelopment, subject to the necessary planning consents.
The closure was announced by the school’s trustees in May after they concluded the school was no longer financially viable.
In a statement at the time, trustees said the decision had been driven by a combination of financial pressures, including falling pupil numbers, the introduction of VAT on private school fees, the loss of charitable status, rising National Insurance costs, and increasing day-to-day operating expenses.
They said they had explored a range of options to secure the school’s future, including efforts to attract more pupils and seek external investment, but were ultimately unable to find a sustainable solution.
When the closure was announced, St Gerard’s had around 107 pupils and 30 members of staff.
Earlier this month, pupils, parents, staff and former pupils gathered for a final farewell celebration, marking the end of more than 100 years of education at one of Bangor’s most recognisable schools.
The sale now marks the next chapter in the history of the prominent Bangor site, with its future set to be determined by a new owner.
