A local teenager has made history by becoming the National Karate Champion of the United Kingdom.
Ben Isaac Hughes, 14, from the Seki Ryu Zan Karate Club in Bangor, secured the prestigious title at the Japanese Karate Association (JKA) National Competition held in Hertfordshire. Competing against the best young martial artists in the country, Ben brought home not one, but two gold medals, winning in both Kata (individual performance) and Kumite (fighting).
A student at Ysgol Friars in Bangor, Ben has dedicated months of intense training to prepare for the renowned tournament. His determination and discipline paid off in spectacular fashion, as he emerged victorious in both of the highly competitive disciplines.
Following his standout performance, Ben received personal congratulations from none other than Sensei Masao Kawasoe, a legendary figure in the world of karate and a senior instructor within the JKA.
Ben’s success is a huge point of pride for the Seki Ryu Zan Karate Club, which trains at the Normal Site Gym in Bangor, LL57 2PZ. The club is open to new members of all ages and skill levels, with sessions held on Monday evenings at 6pm and Thursday evenings at 7pm. Newcomers are welcome anytime and can expect a warm welcome and the chance to train alongside some of the finest young talent in the UK.
For those inspired by Ben’s achievement, now is the perfect time to join the dojo and begin your own karate journey.
