This Is What Bangor Looks Like When It Shines…
Five zones. Eleven hours. One unforgettable day out — and you’re invited to be part of it.
From steel pans and street food to towering Transformers and Taylor Swift tributes, Bangor Summer Festival is where the city comes alive.
There’s a moment — right as you step onto the High Street — when the music hits you first.
A pulse of calypso from the Pantonic Steel Orchestra floats on the breeze, cutting through the scent of barbecue smoke and sugar.
You follow the sound, past stalls stacked high with handmade crafts and warm waffles, through a blur of colour — flags snapping in the wind, bubbles drifting, kids racing past in face paint and fairy wings. Somewhere nearby, someone’s laughing — the belly-deep kind that only happens when you forget to care who’s listening.
A shadow moves over you. You look up.
He’s 10 feet tall, all metal and menace — a Transformer, moving like he’s real, fist raised, kids screaming with delight at his side. Behind him, a brontosaurus, all scales and sound, lets out a low, echoing growl as its tail swings gently past the crowd. It’s huge. And yes, you reach out to touch it — because why wouldn’t you?
This is Bangor Summer Festival.
It’s not an event. It’s a core memory in the making.
A live Taylor Swift tribute is belting out “Shake It Off” on the main stage — and after the set, she’s coming down to meet the fans.
Down at Tay y Fynwent, reggae and ska roll out of giant speakers. Freedom Soundsystem is in full flow — the music wraps around you like heat. Kids are hula-hooping, learning to juggle, bouncing on inflatables. Inside Penrhyn Hall, a UV puppet show glows like a dream.
You pass a dad and Queen Elsa teaching his toddler to dance in the Cathedral grounds. Behind them, someone’s giving drumming a go at the Codi’r Tô workshop — two minutes later, they’re playing with a group. There’s no stage fright here. Just smiles.
You’re handed a clue sheet for the Dino Treasure Hunt. Every child wins something, but one lucky explorer will take home a huge prize bundle worth £100. Suddenly the kids are off — giggling, clue-hunting, determined.
You smell jerk chicken sizzling on the BBQ. The smoke drifts over to where Lightning McQueen and the Ghostbusters and Ecto-1 are parked up — kids queuing for photos, eyes wide. There’s toddler soft play inside the Cathedral, crafts and character meet-and-greets, tea and biscuits for grown-ups, and just enough quiet for a “panad” and a breather.
And somehow… it’s all free.
Free to walk in and feel part of something.
Free to laugh, to dance, to watch your kids try something new.
Free to hear music in every corner, from steel pans to ska beats to show-stopping tributes.
Free to follow the sound of the Brontosaurus… or the smell of a mouthwatering mix of flavours floating through the air.
Of course, there’s plenty you can treat yourself to if the mood takes you —
Fresh waffles. A spin on the waltzers. Something handmade to take home.
But nothing’s forced. Nothing’s expected. This day is yours to enjoy however it suits you.
Because this isn’t just a festival.
It’s a gift — from this city, to its people.
From Mr Urdd and Spider-Man doing the conga on the High Street…
To toddlers waving bubbles at Transformers…
To grandparents needing a quiet “panad” in the Cathedral…
This is Bangor, in full swing.
So mark it down. Call your friends and family. Round up your neighbours.
Plan nothing else that day — just come.
We’ll be here, ready.
And we’ll save you a space.
