The Leader of the Independent Group on Gwynedd Council has appealed for more independent candidates to put themselves forward, ahead of the local elections that will be held in Wales on 5 May this year.

Councillor Angela Russell, who represents Llanbedrog ward on Gwynedd Council, said: “This is an opportunity for us all to have our say on who we want to represent us on Gwynedd Council for the next five years.

“Gwynedd Council is responsible for many things that affect our daily lives and it is important that we have democratically elected councillors to represent us all.

“The most important issue is that those who have a vote have a choice. Many seats at the 2017 elections were unopposed. This meant that around 20 candidates walked into the role of councillor without an election.

“Plaid Cymru have controlled Gwynedd Council for over 25 years. We believe it is time for change. Independent councillors are not answerable to a political party, they do not have to toe the political line. Independent councillors put their wards and their constituents first.

“We believe that all communities/wards should have an election – that people have a choice of who they want to represent them. Many sitting councillors are retiring after years of hard work and dedication – we need people to replace them who represent all kinds of different groups in society.

“There are many vacancies for Independent candidates across Gwynedd – if you care about what is happening in your ward and believe you could be a good representative of your community, you may consider standing as an Independent candidate.

“You could make a real difference, and don’t forget, whatever you decide – use your vote!  Every vote counts in these local elections.

“Did you know that you can vote in local elections even if your main home is elsewhere?  If you pay council tax in Gwynedd, you have a right to vote here.

“If you are a student and your home and university addresses are in two different council areas, you can vote in local elections in both areas.

“Remember to ensure you are registered to vote – you can contact Gwynedd Council to check your name is on the electoral register on 01766 771000.  If you prefer to vote by post, aybody can now apply for a Postal Vote.

“Remember – use your vote! You could make a real difference.”
