A new sustainable resource for the people of Bangor is now looking for city residents who want to start growing their own food, to get in touch.
Rhandiroedd Nantporth Allotments planted a new community orchard last autumn and are in the process of preparing allotment plots. Just over half of the plots have already been allocated. The growing site is being created on Gwynedd council’s Nantporth site, near the city’s football ground.
This organisation will create and maintain an allotment site, community orchard and wildlife garden for Bangor. There is currently no allotment provision apart from a small site exclusively for residents of the Maesgeirchen estate. For the majority of Bangor’s 19,000 citizens, there are no nearby allotments.
Social Farms and Gardens (https://www.farmgarden.org.uk/your-area/wales) received funding from Welsh Government to support the creation of 25 new community orchards across Wales, with the city of Bangor being one beneficiary.
Rhandiroedd Nantporth Allotments was granted planning permission from Gwynedd Council following a fundraising appeal amongst the groups’ supporters. The community orchard and 30 allotment plots will provide more people with access to cheaper fresh and healthy food with near minimum food miles.
The volunteer group would especially like to thank councillors Mair Rowlands and Elin Walker Jones for their wonderful support over many years which has led to Gwynedd Council offering the lease for the land.
