Peacocks clothing store in Bangor will close on Tuesday, 22 September, management at the store have confirmed.

The Bangor store forms part ‘fast-fashion’ retail chain, which is part of the Edinburgh Woollen Mill group, and employs over 6,000 people across the UK. There are currently over four hundred Peacocks retail outlets located in the United Kingdom, with and more than two hundred stores located in twelve other countries throughout Europe.

Originally selling home goods and basic clothing, Peacocks has been re-branded over the years as a value fashion store.

Richard Kirk, the former owner of the chain, worked hard to transform Peacocks into a major fashion player. The retailer won numerous awards, notably the Best Value Retailer award from Drapers. In January 2012, Peacocks entered administration and was bought by The Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group. Edinburgh Group also owns the Jane Norman chain, a fashion outlet for women.

The future of the Bangor store has been in doubt for over 18 months, but recently reopened following the Covid-19 lockdown.

The closure brings a further hammer blow to Bangor High Street following the post-lockdown closures of big names such as Topshop and The Body Shop. Other recent store closures on the include BrightHouse, Carphone Warehouse, and the closure of Shoe Zone is imminent. A number of independent businesses have closed recently as the full effect of the national lockdown hits home.
