Saint Deiniol’s Cathedral and Bangor University Chaplaincy are joining forces to tackle student loneliness with a free Christmas Day feast.
Nearly 100 students have signed up to join in the festive celebration, which has been organised in response to the financial pressure on students amidst a cost of living crisis and as an effort to combat loneliness. A team of student volunteers have led the way in preparing the Christmas menu and coordinating the day’s Christmas activities.
Students can expect a traditional Christmas Day dinner and a day filled with fun and laughter, including Christmas films, games, music and a special appearance by Santa Claus.
The Revd Neville Naidoo, Bangor University and Community Chaplain, says, “We’ve got Christmas Day all wrapped up for students. Anyone who might be alone this Christmas is welcome to join us for our free festive feast.
“It’s the first time we’ve organised such an event and we’ve worked hard to create a memorable and fun-filled Christmas experience. We recognise that financial constraints and soaring flight costs may prevent some of our international students from returning home and it’s only right that in this season of goodwill we bring people together at Christmas.”
Neville, who recently moved from South Africa to Bangor, understands how difficult it is to spend Christmas away from family. “My partner and I moved to North Wales three months ago so we know what it’s like to be on the other side of the world from your family and friends. Christmas can be a lonely time for many and by organising this event we hope to play a part in tackling loneliness within the student community.
“We’re both excited to be spending this Christmas making new friends, eating mince pies and having a lots of festive cheer. There’s snow better way to spend Christmas than with friends and food!”
The Christmas event is open to all students and booking is essential. Email Neville Naidoo to reserve your place nevillenaidoo@cinw.org.uk
