A man was rescued from the roof of his car, after it was swept away in raging floodwater from the Afon Cegin at ‘White Bridge’ near Bangor.
The motorist had attempted to cross a flooded ‘Ford’ on a road between Llandegai and Bangor, when his car was swept away by the force of the water in the Afon Cegin.
The Ford was in full flood after two days of continuous rain from Strom Christoph and the car was swept into deeper water. The driver became trapped but managed to climb onto the roof of his car and call the emergency services.
The North Wales Fire and Rescue Services water rescue team and volunteers from Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue responded to the emergency just after 6pm on Wednesday, 20 January.
A statement from Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team said: “Just after 1800hrs, the team were called out to reports of a man stuck on the roof of a car having been washed away in Storm Christoph.
“He had tried to drive through the river ford along the road from Llandegai to Bangor but had become stuck in deep water and had climbed onto the roof of his car.
“The water rescue team from North Wales Fire Service arrived first and, supported by team swift water rescue technicians, deployed a rescue sled to bring the man safely back to dry land.
“The cold casualty was checked by team casualty carers but was thankfully uninjured.”
