Ysbyty Gwynedd’s singing Hospital Chaplain Wynne Roberts, has won a top ‘Elvis’ award at this year’s Porthcawl’s Elvis Festival
Wynne was among 40,000 people who enjoyed the Festival where he received his Elvies Award – alongside seven other Elvis tribute acts.
The North Wales Hospital Chaplain received the Gospel Award at this year’s event and performed at the festival’s flagship Elvies Award Show at Porthcawl’s Grand Pavilion.
Wynne, from Menai Bridge, said: “Although I’ve always been an Elvis fan, I only started singing to entertain my late mother in a nursing home.
“I never ever expected my singing career to take off in the way it has. It was a fantastic experience to be able to perform with a full live band and backing singers on the Saturday night – and I am grateful to event organisers for deciding to present me with the 2018 Elvies Gospel Award.”
Festival organiser, Peter Phillips added: “I was delighted when our Judges decided to give this years’ Best Gospel Award to Wynne.
“Having worked with him during last years’ charity walk and in respect of the Trinity Church Gospel Service during the Festival, along with being aware of the tireless work he does with care homes the award is thoroughly deserved.”
Earlier on the Saturday afternoon Wynne, who through his concerts, has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, had the unique experience of blessing the marriages of two couples who had travelled from Australia to attend the Festival.
The blessing was part of Wynne’s ‘rooftop show’ where he performed on the roof of the Grand Pavilion to thousands of people.
“This was just another example of how being an Elvis Tribute Artist and also a Chaplain fit so well together.
“When I started singing I wasn’t sure how it was going to work out – but it has been fantastic.
“I am often asked to sing to patients in hospital – not just in Ysbyty Gwynedd but in Community Hospitals and Nursing Homes all over the area.
“Elvis was a deeply spiritual individual – and there is no doubt that Gospel was his favourite musical genre.
“For me, winning the Gospel Award at Porthcawl is the pinnacle of my singing career – and further proof that being both a Hospital Chaplain and an Elvis Tribute Artist fit together so well,” added Wynne.
