Brave fundraisers are being invited to take on a thrilling challenge this spring – by abseiling down one of Anglesey’s most recognisable landmarks in support of local children and families.

Hope House Tŷ Gobaith Children’s Hospices are hosting a sponsored abseil down the 89-foot Marquess of Anglesey Column in Llanfairpwll on Saturday, May 9.

Participants will step backwards over the edge high above the Menai Strait, guided safely by professional abseil specialists Go Vertical, in what promises to be both an unforgettable experience and an important fundraiser for the charity.

The hospices provide vital care and support for children living with life-threatening conditions and their families across North Wales, as well as Shropshire and Cheshire.

Organisers say the event is open to anyone with a sense of adventure who wants to support a cause that makes a real difference in the community.

Entry costs £30, with participants asked to raise £150 in sponsorship. Everyone taking part will receive a bespoke event T-shirt and a light lunch on the day.

The charity is also encouraging local businesses to get involved as event partners. Last year’s abseil was supported by Menai Heating.

Jamie Jones from Menai Heating said supporting the event was a privilege.

“We would strongly encourage other organisations to consider partnering with Hope House Tŷ Gobaith. The difference they make to families facing the most challenging circumstances is profound and lasting.

After attending the open day and seeing firsthand the environment the team have created for children and their families, it truly reinforced why their work is so important.

Seeing how donations directly contribute to creating a safe, comforting and uplifting space was both humbling and inspiring.”

Event organiser Nikki Sullivan said the day promises to be both exciting and memorable.

“Spring will be in the air – and so will you if you join us this May for our abseil.

It’s such a wonderful location and atmosphere on the day, and with allocated time slots you can plan a wider visit to Anglesey as well.”

She added that the event will help the charity continue its mission to support families facing incredibly difficult circumstances.

“Come join us and ensure we can continue reaching every child and family locally living with a life-threatening condition, giving them access to respite, nursing, counselling and therapeutic play free of charge.”

The event takes place at the Marquess of Anglesey Column, Llanfairpwll, between 9am and 5pm.

Hope House Children’s Hospices support more than 750 children and their families, providing specialist care from diagnosis through the lifetime of a child and offering bereavement support to families.

It costs around £10 million each year to run the charity’s services, with most funding coming from public donations and fundraising.
